Recently, I came across the remarkable journey of Lindsay Hansen, a former and original employee at Rebel Sleep Institute (Rebel), who, after years of dedicated service, chose a different path to raise her family in Australia and now serves as a Relationship Manager for Toyota Australia. Lindsay's story is one of tremendous accomplishments, marked by a strong entrepreneurial spirit, a robust work ethic, and a genuine interest in helping people – attributes that set her apart, quickly earning her a highly sought-after MVP award from Toyota.
As I delved into Lindsay's achievements and reflected on her contributions to Rebel, I felt genuinely happy for her and couldn't help but ponder the common narrative that often unfolds when employees decide to move on. The idea that once an individual chooses a different trajectory, the assumed family ties are abruptly severed seems counterintuitive to the values we claim to uphold within organizations.
If we authentically regard employees as members of our work family, this familial bond should endure even when someone opts to pursue new opportunities or believes that their time with the company has naturally concluded. In family dynamics, we don't sever ties with relatives simply because of conflicts or decisions to pursue divergent paths. Organizations, I argue, should adopt a similar mindset. Leadership is about providing an environment where individuals can thrive, feel part of something significant, and contribute to the growth and direction of the organization. When employees, like Lindsay, choose to depart – whether to explore opportunities across the globe or for other reasons – their decision should be met with celebration rather than lamentation, despite the difficulties that may unfold following their departure.
It is disheartening to witness individuals who have given their all to a company being escorted to the door as if their contributions are suddenly inconsequential. This is not how we treat family members. Whether the employee chooses to part on their own or the company makes this difficult decision, efforts must be made to protect their legacy and to acknowledge their commitment and accomplishment. In instances of departure, a thoughtful and appreciative approach is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the organizational culture and the relationships that have been cultivated among employees over the years. Recognizing the contributions of departing members, irrespective of the circumstances, fosters an environment of mutual respect and gratitude, reinforcing the idea that the shared journey does not end with a farewell but becomes a part of the collective narrative that defines the organization.
At Rebel, we want to do better, and as part of this renewed focus, we are launching an initiative that will dedicate space in our offices to give credit to past employees through images, stories, achievements, and more. This is a program aimed at preserving the contributions of those who have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on our history.
One of our tenets at Rebel is to “find flexibility within structure.” This is most often considered when trying to find our way to “yes” when supporting a client or when we feel that red tape may be impacting our ability to achieve our mission. But, this has far-reaching impacts in other areas, including within employee dismissal. We can, and must, appreciate the legal ramifications that can influence how an employee departure is managed, and this is real, but we can manage risk while continuing to treat these family members with respect and dignity as they navigate their way out of the organization.
As Lindsay thrives in her new role at Toyota, and other former Rebel employees find success in their endeavors, it is essential that we embrace change and recognize that family ties can and should extend beyond the confines of an organizational structure. The name on a pay stub must not erase the shared history and accomplishments that have shaped both individuals and the organization they once called home. So with this, I would like to thank those who have left us but nonetheless helped shape Rebel into who we are today. Lindsay, Mariane, Fatina, Meighan, Felicia, Wedad, Heath, Andre, and others, thank you.
The inspiration for this piece arises from learning about what can only be described as humiliating experiences that highly talented individuals faced as they were helped out of their respective organizations—a place where their efforts were once celebrated. I have also struggled myself to do the right thing in these circumstances and am committed to doing better. We will be grateful for the contributions of those that are moving on and acknowledge that our organizations are better and richer in experiences because of their dedication and hard work. As we bid farewell to one chapter, we welcome the opportunities that new paths bring, knowing that the echoes of our shared endeavors will resonate through the halls of Rebel.

Respiratory disorders affect a significant portion of the population, impacting their quality of life and overall health[1]. Fortunately, advancements in medical technology have led to the development of innovative treatments like myAirvo2 therapy, which provide substantial benefits for patients with respiratory conditions. In this blog post, we will explore myAirvo2 therapy, its indications, the types of respiratory disorders it helps with, the benefits it offers, and how it works. We will also discuss the use of myAirvo2 therapy with and without oxygen therapy, as well as provide Canadian statistics on the prevalence of respiratory disorders.
myAirvo2 therapy, also known as high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy, is a non-invasive respiratory treatment that delivers humidified and heated oxygen-enriched air to patients. It is primarily indicated for individuals with various respiratory conditions, including:
Respiratory disorders affect a considerable portion of the Canadian population. According to the latest available data, approximately 6.3% of Canadians aged 35 to 79 have been diagnosed with COPD, with a higher prevalence in men (7.5%) compared to women (5.2%)[1]. Additionally, asthma affects approximately 8.5% of the Canadian population, with the highest prevalence among children aged 0-14 years[4]. These statistics highlight the significant burden respiratory disorders pose to individuals and society as a whole.
myAirvo2 therapy provides several benefits for patients with respiratory conditions:
myAirvo2 therapy consists of a humidifier, an air/oxygen blender, a heated breathing circuit, and a nasal cannula. The system is designed to deliver a precisely regulated flow of warm, humidified, and oxygen-enriched air to the patient's respiratory system. The warmed and humidified air helps maintain optimal airway conditions, promoting effective gas exchange in the lungs[3].
The myAirvo2 system has adjustable flow rates, allowing healthcare professionals to tailor the therapy to meet individual patient needs. The heated circuit and nasal cannula prevent the airway from drying out, reducing discomfort and minimizing the risk of damage to the respiratory mucosa. For patients who require supplemental oxygen, the myAirvo2 system can be combined with an oxygen concentrator or cylinder, ensuring precise oxygen delivery[3].
myAirvo2 therapy can be used with or without supplemental oxygen, depending on the patient's needs. Patients requiring additional oxygen support can benefit from myAirvo2 therapy combined with oxygen therapy, as it allows for precise oxygen concentration delivery at higher flow rates. This is especially important for patients with severe respiratory conditions or those experiencing acute exacerbations.
For individuals not on oxygen therapy, myAirvo2 therapy can still provide significant benefits. The heated, humidified, and oxygen-enriched air helps maintain optimal respiratory conditions, improving oxygenation, secretion clearance, and reducing the work of breathing. This makes myAirvo2 therapy an effective and versatile treatment option for a wide range of respiratory disorders.
myAirvo2 therapy, or high-flow nasal cannula therapy, is a non-invasive respiratory treatment that offers numerous benefits for individuals with respiratory disorders. Its ability to provide heated, humidified, and oxygen-enriched air promotes better oxygenation, secretion clearance, and respiratory comfort. Whether used with or without supplemental oxygen, myAirvo2 therapy is a valuable tool in improving the quality of life for patients with conditions such as COPD, acute respiratory failure, asthma exacerbation, pneumonia, post-extubation respiratory support, and sleep-disordered breathing.
If you would like to learn more about myAirvo2 therapy, contact our team, we would love to hear from you. Our experienced healthcare professionals can provide personalized guidance and support, helping you make informed decisions about your respiratory care.

In this blog, we will explore the impact of fatigue on the workplace, with a focus on productivity, presenteeism, incidents, injuries, and safety critical occupations. We will also introduce Rebel Sleep Institute's Workplace Sleep and Fatigue Program and its solutions for addressing workplace fatigue.
Fatigue can significantly affect productivity in the workplace. Workers who are fatigued may have difficulty concentrating, making decisions, and completing tasks efficiently. According to a report by the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, fatigued workers are 70% less productive than those who are not [2]. Moreover, workers who are fatigued are more likely to engage in presenteeism, which is the act of coming to work despite feeling unwell or tired. This can lead to reduced productivity, as well as an increased risk of errors, accidents, and injuries [3].
Fatigue can also increase the risk of incidents and injuries in the workplace. According to a study by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, fatigue was a factor in up to 20% of all workplace accidents [4]. Moreover, workers who are fatigued are more likely to make mistakes, have slower reaction times, and take longer to recover from injuries [5]. This can result in increased absenteeism and workers' compensation claims, as well as decreased productivity and morale.
Workers in safety critical occupations, such as healthcare, transportation, and construction, are particularly vulnerable to the effects of fatigue. These workers often work long hours, irregular shifts, and have high levels of mental and physical demands, which can increase the risk of fatigue-related incidents and injuries [6]. According to a report by the Canadian Centre for Health and Safety in Agriculture, up to 60% of truck drivers experience fatigue-related issues [2]. This highlights the importance of addressing workplace fatigue in safety critical occupations.

Team, Rebel
Our local team members, Alan, Darly Ann, Glen, Jola, and Rubina, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the clinic, and are anxious to provide support to the Surrey community, to ensure they get the quality sleep they need to live healthy and happy lives.
As their first initiative, the team is working together to select names for our clinic rooms that represent local "rebels." Terry Fox was the first "rebel" selected at our Calgary location by the local team, and we look forward to hearing which "rebels" will represent this team and location. The team puts a lot of energy into these selections and does their best to honor them with integrity and respect.
We are also proud to announce that the Rebel Sleep Institute has recently been designated a Provisional Accredited Facility for Home Sleep Apnea Testing by the Diagnostic Accredited Program with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of BC. This designation recognizes our commitment to providing high-quality care and our use of the latest technology and techniques to help our patients get the sleep they need.
If you are struggling with sleep issues, we encourage you to reach out to our team at info@rebelsleep.ca or by telephone at 604.307-2686.
Thank you for choosing the Rebel Sleep Institute for your sleep and oxygen needs.
The term "rebel" often conjures up images of troublemakers, outlaws, or nonconformists. However, at Rebel Sleep Institute, it represents something entirely different. We see it as a symbol of our commitment to challenging the status quo, embracing innovation, and pushing boundaries.
Complacency and stagnation are challenges that the healthcare industry faces, and the sleep sector is not immune. One-dimensional, off-the-shelf treatments are frequently prescribed, potentially overlooking underlying causes and leaving some patients without adequate treatment. As rebels in the industry, we strive to combat traditional practices by identifying the various causes of fatigue and providing personalized solutions to ensure that each patient receives the individualized attention and care they deserve.
Research has shown that rebels can bring significant value to the workplace by promoting innovation and creativity. Harvard Business School Professor Francesca Gino notes that rebels "see things differently, question norms, and push back against constraints. This can lead to novel ideas and fresh perspectives that drive progress and growth” (Gino, 2018). Moreover, rebels can challenge groupthink and bring attention to blind spots or areas of improvement within an organization. By speaking up and challenging norms, rebels can foster a culture of open communication and continuous improvement. This can lead to a more dynamic and adaptable organization that is better equipped to navigate changing market conditions, stay ahead of the competition, and provide the best care possible.
In sleep medicine, continuous innovation is paramount to improving patient outcomes. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach, we prioritize customized programs that take into account the unique requirements and circumstances of each patient and organization. Businesses are beginning to recognize that a contented and healthier workforce leads to superior organizational performance. By enhancing sleep health and investing in a fatigue strategy, overall well-being is promoted, and individuals and companies can overcome significant obstacles that frequently hinder them from achieving optimal outcomes. By keeping abreast of the latest advancements and executing personalized solutions, we can assist our patients and clients in realizing their goals and living healthier, more fulfilling lives.
The word "institute" in our name signifies our commitment to education and evidence-based medicine. We believe that education is crucial in empowering our patients to take control of their health and make informed decisions. We cultivate a culture of collaboration and open communication within our team, encouraging personal growth, and the exchange of ideas, insights, and experiences. This approach allows us to learn from one another, build on each other's strengths, identify areas for improvement, and ultimately provide better care to those we are fortunate to serve. By educating patients, healthcare providers, and employers on the importance of sleep and its impact on overall health and performance, we can create a world where sleep is prioritized and valued.
Our name reflects our belief in challenging the status quo and pushing beyond conventional treatment solutions. We're here to help our patients achieve optimal health and wellness through an integrative approach that incorporates cutting-edge medical practices, education, and support.
We firmly believe that progress is driven by rebels, and we're proud to be a part of a movement that's pushing the boundaries of what's possible. Our goal is to empower individuals to "Own the Night and Seize the Day™" by providing them with the tools and resources they need to thrive.
We invite individuals who share our passion to join us in our commitment to create change and improve the lives of those around us.

Gino, F. (2018). The business case for curiosity. Harvard Business Review, 96(5), 50-57.
]]>Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder that affects breathing during sleep, leading to decreased oxygen levels and frequent awakenings during the night. It is estimated that 26% of Canadians between the ages of 30 and 70 have OSA, with men having a higher prevalence than women [1]. OSA is characterized by repetitive episodes of partial or complete upper airway obstruction during sleep.
Untreated OSA increases the risk of hypertension, stroke, heart disease, and diabetes, among other conditions [2]. Symptoms of OSA include loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, excessive daytime sleepiness, and morning headaches [3]. The primary treatment for OSA is CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure), which delivers a constant flow of air through a mask worn over the nose or mouth during sleep, preventing throat collapse and maintaining an open airway [4]. CPAP therapy is highly effective in reducing symptoms and improving health outcomes.
While CPAP is the primary treatment for OSA, secondary treatment options include dental devices, surgery, and lifestyle changes [5]. While CPAP remains the most effective and widely prescribed treatment for OSA, it is critical to select the most appropriate treatment option for each patient. The sleep physician reviewing the results of the diagnostic sleep study will provide treatment recommendations based on individual patient needs [6].
Despite the benefits of CPAP therapy, patient compliance rates remain a challenge. Studies have shown that up to 50% of patients discontinue or have poor adherence to CPAP therapy within the first year of treatment [7]. Factors contributing to poor compliance include mask discomfort, pressure setting difficulties, and social stigma associated with wearing a mask during sleep [8].
To improve compliance, personalized treatment plans and regular follow-up can be implemented. Patients should be educated on proper mask fitting and usage, encouraged to use the device regularly, and communicate any issues they experience with the device or therapy. Working with reputable and high-quality companies when purchasing CPAP devices can also help ensure patients receive necessary support and education [9]. When used effectively, CPAP can truly be a game changer, as described by a current client.
“When you no longer wake up exhausted & can face your day without burnout mid afternoon, you’ll be thankful that you went for a visit”. (Matt. B_Calgary)
Regular use of CPAP therapy has been shown to have significant health benefits for individuals with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). Studies have demonstrated that CPAP therapy can improve the quality of life by reducing daytime sleepiness, improving mood and cognitive function, and decreasing the risk of accidents related to sleepiness [4]. Additionally, CPAP therapy can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, including hypertension, stroke, and heart disease, which are common comorbidities associated with untreated OSA [2]. Furthermore, research has indicated that long-term use of CPAP therapy can also lead to improvements in metabolic and glycemic control, making it an important component in the management of type 2 diabetes [10].
In Canada, the cost of CPAP therapy is often covered by private insurers or public health in some provinces, making it accessible for many patients [11]. This accessibility allows individuals to receive the necessary treatment for their OSA without worrying about the financial burden. Additionally, it is important to note that there are many reputable and high-quality companies that offer CPAP devices and support services in Canada, ensuring that patients receive the necessary education and support to improve compliance and achieve optimal health outcomes [9].
Regular use of CPAP therapy can improve multiple aspects of an individual's life, and the accessibility of this treatment in Canada allows many individuals to benefit from it. It is important to do your homework when selecting a CPAP provider. While becoming accustomed to using CPAP is important, the highest quality companies provide ongoing, long term therapeutic support, and are anxious to help when they are when needed.
Improving CPAP compliance is essential for maximizing the benefits of this effective treatment for OSA. Strategies such as personalized treatment plans, regular follow-up, and education and support for patients can help improve adherence to therapy [9]. Proper adherence to CPAP therapy can significantly improve your quality of life and reduce your risk of serious health conditions associated with untreated OSA.
If you are struggling with sleep apnea and find it difficult to comply with CPAP therapy, it may be time to seek additional support. Rebel Sleep Institute is a trusted, Canadian owned sleep clinic that provides personalized treatment plans and support to patients with sleep disorders, including sleep apnea. Our team of experienced sleep professionals can help you select the right CPAP device, fit the mask correctly, and adjust the pressure settings to make you comfortable during sleep. We will also educate you on the benefits of CPAP therapy and provide regular follow-up to ensure you adhere to the treatment plan. Contact our team to learn more about how we can help.

Do you find yourself feeling constantly tired and groggy despite getting a full night's sleep? Do you frequently wake up gasping for air or find that you snore loudly throughout the night? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you may be suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). OSA is a common sleep disorder that affects millions of people worldwide, and is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep that can last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. In this blog, we'll explore the use of home sleep apnea testing (HSAT) for the diagnosis of OSA in Canada, with a focus on Vancouver.
OSA is often characterized by loud snoring, gasping for air during sleep, and daytime sleepiness [1]. Other symptoms may include morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, and irritability. While OSA can affect anyone, there are certain risk factors that increase your likelihood of developing the condition. These include obesity, smoking, alcohol use, and a family history of OSA [1].
There are numerous risks associated with untreated OSA, including serious consequences for your health. It can increase your risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It can also worsen existing conditions such as depression, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) [2]. Additionally, OSA can affect your quality of life by causing fatigue, daytime sleepiness, and poor concentration [2].
The Canadian Sleep Society (CSS), a non-profit organization that aims to promote awareness and understanding of sleep, has developed guidelines for the use of HSAT in the diagnosis of OSA. In many provinces, including British Columbia, HSAT is now the standard for the diagnosis of OSA [3]. Alberta, the neighbor to the east, adopted the use of HSAT many years ago. However, some provinces, such as Ontario, still require the use of polysomnography (PSG) to diagnose OSA. PSG is a more comprehensive test that involves spending a night in a sleep laboratory with monitoring equipment attached to your body. PSG is also recommended throughout Canada for those with a more complex medical history or if the results of the HSAT suggest additional investigation is necessary [3].
To determine whether you are at risk for OSA, healthcare providers may use validated assessment tools such as the STOP-BANG or the Berlin Questionnaire [4]. The STOP-BANG tool assesses your likelihood of having OSA based on factors such as snoring, age, and neck circumference [4]. The Berlin Questionnaire assesses your risk based on factors such as snoring, tiredness, and high blood pressure [4]. While it is important to discuss your concerns with a healthcare professional, and to undergo a formal assessment, assessment tools are available online.
If you suspect you may be suffering from OSA, it's important to seek medical attention. Fortunately, in British Columbia, HSAT is a covered service under the Medical Services Plan (MSP), so there are no out of pocket fees required. And, HSAT is a convenient and effective way to diagnose or rule-out OSA from the comfort of your own home

Susan, thank you for your trust in our team and for supporting our efforts to provide quality, comprehensive sleep apnea, and fatigue management solutions.
]]>Mr. Walker discusses how room temperature contributes to sleep quality and how simply reducing your room temperature can have an immediate impact.
]]>The entire Rebel Sleep Institute concept originated as a result of so many people being tired, with few resources available in the Calgary and Canadian market. Now that we’re open, it shouldn't come as a surprise that our interactions with “the tired” are climbing, but they are!
I’m hearing it everywhere, whether from neighbours, friends, family, the news, and even during the World Series. CPAP is now commonplace and “I’m so tired” has joined, “my wife says I apparently snore really loud”, as two commonly used phrases. This tongue in cheek image representing "sleep club", sent from a friend and now patient, illustrates just how many friends and family are undergoing sleep testing or are now users of CPAP.
So what can you do if you’re in Calgary, exhausted, and have increased feelings of frustration and hopelessness?
It is always recommended to start with a visit to your primary care physician. While some companies in Calgary (and across Canada) will facilitate sleep testing without a prescription, we do not recommend this approach. There are many possible reasons why you are tired and your physician should participate in any such investigation.
While not everyone who is tired has sleep apnea, when looking to identify the causes of your fatigue, it is necessary to either confirm or rule out obstructive sleep apnea. Considered a very common sleep disorder, obstructive sleep apnea can have considerable negative health consequences.
Those suffering from obstructive sleep apnea often snore loudly (but not always!), and have witnessed choking and gasping during sleep, most often observed by their bed partner. Additionally, those with this sleep disorder may have messy bed sheets, morning headaches, go to the bathroom frequently during the night, tend to be overweight, have a higher incidence of hypertension, and have unrefreshing sleep (among other).
If you're interested in determining your likelihood of having obstructive sleep apnea, you are encouraged to complete a simple online assessment tool, such as the stop-bang, found at stopbang.ca. If you suspect you may have this common disease, you may also reach out directly to Rebel Sleep Institute and we can help coordinate in-home sleep testing with your doctor. This simple test, utilized as the primary diagnostic tool for obstructive sleep apnea in Calgary, and in other parts of Canada, can be done in the comfort of your home.
In the past, if obstructive sleep apnea had been ruled out, or for those with a low probability of having the disease, your options have been limited. In Calgary, there are a few private sleep labs where you can be seen, however, you are often asked to sleep on-site at the facility at a cost of $800-$1000. While not everyone’s cup of tea, this overnight test is considered the gold standard and is a good option for some, particularly for those with a more complex medical history.
Alternatively, Rebel Sleep Institute has recently introduced a new service called the Comprehensive Sleep and Fatigue Evaluation. This program includes an intensive clinical and psychological evaluation, advanced in-home sleep testing, and sleep physician interpretation and recommendations. This is truly one of the most comprehensive assessments available anywhere in Canada and is ideal for the exhausted... but untreated.

The organization behind the PR campaign, the Pro Player Health Alliance, is backed by a roster of elite former NFL players, including Super Bowl-winning players Tony Dorsett and Derek Kennard. The group claims that more than “60% of former NFL players suffer from sleep apnea,” citing a 2009 Mayo Clinic study, "Mayo Clinic Finds Retired National Football League Players at Increased Risk for Heart Problems," as its source. (The original study clarifies that this figure is specific to NFL linemen, and not all professional football players.)

The 21-year-old sophomore centre had recorded a double-double in each of his first three playoff contests, but his impact faded as the series went on, culminating in one of the worst games he’s ever played. Valanciunas missed four of his five shots and scored three points in 27 minutes that afternoon. The Raptors were minus-23 with him on the floor, plus-22 with him off it.

Truck drivers are involved in about one-fifth of accidents in Canada each year. And the risks of the profession — to drivers themselves and to the public — go far beyond collisions.
As a road safety researcher, I have been funded by Transport Canada, the Canadian Institute of Health Research and the Alberta Ministry of Labour to investigate the health and wellness of truck drivers. My research shows that truck drivers are exposed to many risks affecting their health and their ability to drive safely, due to the nature of the job and the job market.
